Still hoping for Akmal Shaikh

As the time ticks by, I hope very much that the Chinese government might show mercy to Akmal Shaikh who is sentenced to be executed at 1030 Chinese time (0230 GMT) today. The following story shows that the government has made a final appeal to China to halt his execution on the grounds that he is thought to be mentally ill. Foreign Office minister Ivan Lewis said the execution would be "entirely inappropriate" after last-ditch talks with the Chinese ambassador in London. He also said that it "cannot be right that there has not been any medical assessment done of Mr Shaikh's mental condition. In any judicial system that simply cannot be acceptable."
